Watch for first-fill pricing
A promotional first delivery can be attractive, but ask what the account will cost after the promotion. Long-term propane cost matters more than a one-time discount if you use hundreds of gallons per year.
Look at total delivered cost
Ask about delivery minimums, tank rental, monitoring, inspection, hazmat, service or other recurring charges. A slightly higher gallon rate with fewer recurring fees can still be the better account.
Use public benchmarks correctly
NYSERDA's latest surveyed Long Island residential propane benchmark is $4.339 per gallon for July 2026. Long Island combines Nassau and Suffolk counties, and NYSERDA notes that its full-service residential credit-price accounts typically use about 1,100 gallons or more per year. It is a regional benchmark, not a guaranteed quote for a specific home.
The benchmark is useful for context, but the real comparison should be between current quotes for your actual home.
