Propane Tank Sizes Explained: 100, 120, 250, 500 and 1,000 Gallons

Propane tank terminology can be confusing because cylinders may be described in pounds while larger residential tanks are usually described in gallons. You also do not need to know the exact size to request a quote.

100 gallons or less

This catch-all category is useful for smaller residential tanks and homeowners who know they have a relatively small setup but are not sure of the exact capacity.

120 gallons

A 120-gallon tank is commonly used for selected appliances or lower-volume residential propane needs. The actual use case depends on the home and connected equipment.

250 gallons

A 250-gallon tank can support more substantial residential usage. Delivery frequency depends on the appliances, weather and household consumption.

500 and 1,000 gallons

Larger tanks are commonly associated with higher-use homes, whole-home heating, generators or properties that need more storage between deliveries. The correct tank size is a job for the propane installer/provider to determine based on the actual load and site.

No. Pounds and gallons are different units, and a 100-pound cylinder is much smaller than a 100-gallon tank.
