Tank ownership is one of the first things to check before shopping propane providers. If the propane company owns the tank, another supplier generally cannot simply treat it as your equipment.

First, determine who owns the tank

Check your agreement, account paperwork and any labels or ownership markings. If you are unsure, ask the current supplier directly before authorizing another company to fill or service the tank.

Customer-owned tanks

Owning the tank generally gives the homeowner more flexibility to compare suppliers, though a new provider may still require a safety inspection, account setup or documentation before making a delivery.

Supplier-owned or leased tanks

Changing suppliers may require ending the existing tank agreement, having the old supplier remove its tank, and arranging a replacement tank with the new provider. Fees, minimum-use rules or removal terms can apply depending on the contract.
